In order to have a useful halitosis treatment you must address the cause of the bad breath. Mircaptans are a group of organic chemical substances that are mostly made of sulfur. They give off the smell of rotten eggs or rotting cabbage. Some have said they smell like burnt rubber. This is the smell that comes from pulp mill. If you have ever been around one you know what I’m talking about. It is a very strong and stinky smell. This smell is caused by the mercaptans in the air. Even in small concentrations it can become overwhelming. Mercaptans are also found in the production of some petroleum products, pharmaceuticals, and a few pesticides. They can also be quite useful because of their pungent aroma. Mercaptans are used to give natural gas the smell we all recognize. Natural gas has no smell so they started adding mercaptans to save lives.
Unfortunately they are a naturally occurring product of the human body as food is digested. Some food will lead to higher levels of mercaptans than others. The reason for this is that some foods contain volatile sulfur compounds known to cause bad breath. When food starts to spoil the anaerobic bacteria starts to break down the proteins in the food. This releases the mercaptans and the smell of rotting food. This is what makes your garbage can so stinky. When we eat small particles of food are left behind. As the bacteria in the mouth feeds on these particles the bacteria releases the sulfur compounds from the amino acids from the proteins in the food. The amino acid cysteine is transformed to hydrogen sulfide which gives off a rotten egg smell. Methionine is created in this process and then is converted to methyl mercaptan. This gives off a smell that is somewhere between a fresh clove of garlic and a pair of old dirty sweat socks.
One of nature’s ways to create odor is by using sulfur. In nature a strong odor can be used as a form of defense or it can be used as a weapon of attack. Think of the skunk. I can’t think of a more obnoxious smell especially when it is fresh. The odor of the skunk is a naturally produced sulfur compound called skatoles. The same thing happens in your mouth to a lesser degree. The Bacteria feeds on the leftover food particles then the by product is a sulfur compound that creates the bad breath disorders and can affect you sense of taste. This is why it is so important to not only brush your tongue but, it’s also necessary to use a tongue scrapper that you can buy in any drug store. The scrappers do a much better job of removing bacteria and food particles from the cracks of the tongue than just brushing alone can do. Likewise you should always thoroughly rinse your mouth out with clean fresh water after eating anything. This will help a great deal to remove the odor causing bacteria from your mouth.
Mints can be good for a temporary fix, but should not be counted on for long term help. The problem is that most mints contain sugar and the bacteria convert the sugar to gylcan strands. These stands can cause thick layers of plaque to form on your teeth. As you know plaque causes cavities and cavities cause bad breath. It’s a viscous cycle. The good thing about this cycle is that you can get off; you don’t have to ride along. You can change the outcome you can cure bad breath. With a little more effort in your oral hygiene and good tips and information your breath will be smelling fresh and clean in no time.
