We often hear people complaining of severe throat pain without any characteristic or visible swelling of the throat. This pain develops due to stones that are hard pea sized sticky lumps accumulating in the membranous folds of the throat. These stones are composed of minerals such as phosphorus and not dangerous. But, they should be treated as they cause severe discomfort when they become considerably big.

Symptoms of Tonsillolths

Symptoms of these stones are often uncomfortable and invisible on the body. Characteristic symptoms of tonsillolths include

• Halitosis: Presence of bad breath in the mouth is termed as halitosis. It mainly develops due to accumulation of sulphurous substances produced by bacteria present in the throat or mouth. Greater the number of bacteria present in the mouth stronger will be the odor.

• Inflammation in the throat: The tonsil tissues become swollen and it can be felt in the throat as a hard lump. Inflammation of the throat can develop due to other conditions also but these stones are the major cause for frequent swelling of the throat.

• Presence of whitish debris in the throat: This is another characteristic symptom of tonsillolths. If such formations are observed it is very important to consult a physician specialized in taking of ear, nose and throat immediately to treat the inflamed tonsil tissue.

• Severe ear pain: Few people suffering with stones often develop a sharp pain in the ear all of a sudden. This is because of the irritation of the common nerve that connects ear, throat and nose. This pain that develops in the ear or other related area due to problems of the throat is termed referred pain.

In cases of severe infections of the tonsil tissue, fever may also develop. Symptoms such as halitosis and formation of whitish debris in the throat can develop due to other conditions. Hence, before using any medications for tonsil stones consult an ENT specialist for accurate diagnosis.

Treating These Stones

If the pain keeps recurring then the best way to treat the pain is by removing the stones. Surgical removal of tonsil stones termed as tonsillectomy is performed by a professional ENT specialist. Many people feel worried of the pain and side effects of the surgery and hesitate to undergo the surgery. The fact is tonsillectomy is a non-invasive procedure that does not result in pain. The surgery is performed by giving an anesthetic and requires only a day or two of hospital stay.
