Ok well first of all I must point out bacterial vaginosis or BV is not an infection it is purely an inflammation of the vagina caused by an imbalance of the vaginas own bacteria. It is also nothing to be worried about and can be treated quickly and easily. Bacterial vaginosis is one of the most common vagina complaints for women who are sexually active. Although not a sexually transmitted infection it can be brought on by a change or regular change of sexual partner. Many women find that once the inflammation has set it it is very difficult to clear and often recurrent inflammation occurs. This is mainly due to the remedies used or drugs prescribed by the doctor.
If struck with bacterial vaginosis for the first time the best place to start is with a trip to the doctor i would always recommend getting checked over. the doctor could always spot some other underlying condition or problem. The doctor will more than likely prescribed a course of antibiotics. These will usually be either of the following. Ampicillin, Ceftriaxone, Clindamycin, Metronidazole or Tetracycline. Now these antibiotics will clear up the bacterial vaginosis inflammation but the way they do this is to kill all the bacteria within the vagina, including the good bacteria. Good bacteria or lactobacillus is needed to maintain a healthy vagina so once the course of antibiotics is finished there is a good chance that within a week or two the bacterial vaginosis will return.
So what can be done to get instant relief from bacterial vaginosis or BV. Well its alla bout good education and learning to maintain a healthy and well balance vagina. Supplementation is a good place to start. This can be in the form of Acidophilus tablets, these help build the good bacteria within the vagina. Eating yogurt with live cultures is another good way to build good bacteria. Activia is a well known yogurt that does just that. Do not douche, some doctors still recommend douching as a cleaning method but this will more harm than good and is to be avoided. remembering good cleaning habits, it may seem obvious but keeping the vagina clean and wiping correctly will help keep the vaginosis away and stop the spread of bacteria from the anus. Another strongly recommended practice is to air the vagina whenever possible or at least sleep without underwear this allows the vagina to breath and helps prevent bad bacteria or gardnerella build up.
There are many way to keep bacterial vaginosis at bay and the all start with a healthy bacteria balance.
